Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities

Mother’s Day Luncheon
Date:
May 15, 2012
Time:
11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Location:
125 Clairemont Avenue, Decatur, GA 30030
Level:
Service Volunteer

Did you know that in Georgia, a mother living with a developmental disability can lose custody of her children for that reason alone?  AADD takes a strong stand in keeping families together.  We advocate for many mothers who are at risk of losing their children, and find ourselves fighting to reunite mothers with their families.   Mother’s Day is an especially celebratory occasion for us each year.

Our annual Mother’s Day Luncheon is an opportunity for us to honor every mother, especially those living with developmental disabilities.  Help us make our mothers feel extra special by preparing and serving food, assisting with decorations and planning activities.

Annual Picnic & Fun Day
Date:
June 22, 2012
Time
: 11:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Level:
Community Volunteer

Our communities are better when everyone, including individuals with developmental disabilities, contributes and participates.  Join AADD staff, volunteers and the people we are proud to serve for an afternoon of games, barbecue, music and tons of fun!  Take part in a day of friendly competition including bocce, water balloon toss, horse shoes, tug of war, crab tag, obstacle courses and much more!  Volunteers are welcome to bring their families!  This is also a great way for civic, faith-based, corporate and school groups to get involved.

Volunteers can assist with planning games, bringing a dish to share, serving and preparing food, set-up and post event clean up.

Back to School Drive
Families we support often have children in need of school supplies to prepare them for success in the school year.  You can provide the tools necessary to ensure a brighter future for the children we serve by donating school supplies during the months of June and July.

It has been shown that having access to age-appropriate books critically improves children’s reading levels.  Bring your new or “like new” books to AADD’s office and give children the tools necessary to reach their reading potential

Justice and Developmental Disabilities Training
Date:
Ongoing
Level:
Service Volunteer

People with developmental disabilities are three times more likely to be incarcerated because they do not always understand the questions they are being asked by law enforcement officials.  You can help law enforcement professionals better understand people with developmental disabilities by becoming a Justice and Developmental Disabilities (JDD) trainer.

The JDD Training consists of a presentation designed to help law enforcement professionals better understand situations that may include someone with a developmental disability.  The training sessions typically last an hour and are administered throughout the Metro Atlanta area.

Ice Cream Social
Level:
Community Volunteer
This fun opportunity is a great way for your civic, faith-based, corporate, school, or social groups to foster relationships with some of the wonderful children AADD serves.   Hosting an ice cream social is fun and easy!  All your group has to do is provide the ice cream, and plan exciting games to help make for an enjoyable activity for all!  You are welcome and encouraged to bring your own children as well!

Availability for hosting an AADD ice cream social is limited to school breaks including spring, summer, and winter.  Opportunities are offered on a first-come, first-serve basis.  If your group would like to host an ice cream social please contact Suzie Fatkin at suzie@aadd.org or (404) 809-2911.

Workshops
AADD always welcomes volunteers to lead workshops.  Do you have a special skill that you’d like to share?  Are you an expert in a specific subject area that could benefit the people we serve?  Are you a professional who teaches life skills or are certified in helping individuals cope with traumatic experiences?  If yes, AADD needs you!  You can lead a workshop that will provide individuals living with developmental disabilities a toolkit for life!

Birthday Party Benefit
Don’t want gifts for your birthday?  Consider having a party to benefit AADD and spend your birthday with the wonderful people that we serve.  AADD will provide the space, you provide the rest!  We’ll even have staff available to assist with logistics for your special day!

General Transportation
Level:
Mentor Volunteer
Do you have a few free hours during the week?  Many of the individuals we serve have no other form of transportation and struggle to access medical care without assistance.  Our participants often need help getting to medical appointments, the grocery store, social security offices and Individualized Education Plan (IEP) school meetings.  You can help meet the transportation needs of people with developmental disabilities by offering your vehicle and driving them to the places they need to go. These trips usually last less than two hours and will provide vital assistance to a member of your local community.
