A woman imprisoned by limited literacy, homelessness, and the trauma of past abuse, found her way to a place of strength, health, stability, and progress. An educator took her own impressive education and turned it into a two-decade-and-counting career of service and support at All About Developmental Disabilities. A mother, who spent every hour of every day caring for her adult son, found her voice and became a formidable advocate for him and for all people living with developmental disabilities in Georgia.
These are the stories highlighted in this annual report because they not only inspire all of us, but also reinforce that AADD’s mission and 53-year legacy is as relevant in today’s times as ever before.
Since our founding in 1956 as a grassroots group of concerned parents, AADD continues to renew our commitment to remain one of Georgia’s premier providers. Through consistent and passionate leadership we continue to provide needed services, broad-based education, and effective advocacy for children, adults, and families living with developmental disabilities.
In June, AADD was thrilled to see the leadership torch passed to Dave Blanchard by Mary Yoder, who retired after 32 years of service. Mary helped AADD achieve great stability, even in times of economic turmoil, by working closely with our staff, our Board of Directors, and our Advisory Board to create communities that are truly inclusive of people with disabilities.
Under Mary’s stewardship, AADD touched more than 5,000 lives in the last year alone. We experienced a smooth transition built on a solid foundation of a successful organization. In addition, we celebrated our name change from the Atlanta Alliance on Developmental Disabilities to a more reflective name: All About Developmental Disabilities.
Now, Dave is committed to continuing Mary’s legacy of leadership. His work history includes over ten years with AADD in roles such as Director for the Division of Public Policy and Education, Coordinator for the Unlock the Waiting Lists! Campaign, and Project Coordinator for Partners in Policymaking. Dave has extensive experience working with community organizing, training, and governmental affairs programming focused on issues related to families with children with developmental disabilities. He believes whole-heartedly in the mission of AADD. The importance of community involvement and public service are values instilled in him by his family—namely his grandfather. This legacy of commitment is evidenced by the passion Dave brings to AADD, and we are excited about the leadership he will bring in overseeing the organization.
Today, there is still so much work to be done. More than 6,700 Georgians with developmental disabilities continue to await help in relative silence. Now, more than ever, our advocacy, education, support programs, and direct services are of vital importance. On behalf of AADD’s Board and staff, we remain firmly committed to reaching those in need. With your help, we can create more success stories like those you’ll read in this report, and touch even more lives. Together, we can continue to fulfill our important mission of building communities of support, acceptance, and opportunity for children, families, and individuals living with developmental disabilities.
