“This event helps to get the word out that no amount of alcohol has been proven safe for the developing fetus, and that women who are pregnant, or think they could be pregnant, simply should not drink any form of alcohol,” said Winokur.
Top sponsors for this family-friendly event include Booz-Allen-Hamilton, Hogan Construction Group, WSB-TV, Skirt Magazine, and 97.1 The River. The event is scheduled for Sunday, September 9, at Atlanta’s Grant Park. Registration begins at 7 a.m., with the race officially starting at 8:09 a.m, rain or shine. If you haven’t registered yet, you may register online by following this link.
“We’ll have a bounce house and other activities for children, and all participants can enjoy a raffle for great prizes. Further, for runners who are looking to fulfill their Grand Prix requirements, the race has received its Grand Prix designation.
“We also need volunteers to help with the event – to help with registration and to hand out water and refreshments to the runners and walkers,” said Matt Pieper, AADD director of development.
Volunteers are asked to contact Pieper by calling 404-881-9777 ext. 232 as soon as is possible.

Chip Conrad, co-chair of Legacy 2007, with his son, Clay, who works for Park 'n Fly and was recently honored as Employee of the Year at AADD's Heart of Gold banquet. |
The annual Legacy Breakfast is being hosted this year by Darlene and Chip Conrad. Chip, a long-time partner at King & Spalding, LLC, is a former AADD board president and current advisory board member.
The breakfast, which begins promptly at 7:30 a.m., offers a glimpse into AADD’s future work toward building communities of support, acceptance, and opportunity for children, adults, and families living with developmental disabilities. The event is AADD’s most significant annual effort to share the agency’s vision, reach out to the community for involvement, and to inspire contributors in support of our work, according to Matt Pieper, AADD development director.
AADD welcomes all to the breakfast who want to learn more about AADD’s plans and opportunities for support and involvement. Advance reservations are required and may be phoned in by calling Matt Pieper at 404-881-9777, ext. 232. Pieper is also the person to call for information about how your corporation or business can be a part of sponsoring this high-profile event. |

“Exemplary Conformance to the Standards” for 2006 Film Series
CARF, an independent, nonprofit accrediting body with a mission of promoting the quality, value, and optimal outcomes of services, recently awarded AADD a Three-Year Accreditation. This is the longest period of time for which CARF can accredit an organization. The following services were accredited: Community Services: Family Services, as well as Employment Services for Community Employment and Job-Site Training Services. |

“We are delighted to achieve the Three-Year Accreditation, which extends our current accreditation. The evaluation process is thorough, and reflects our ongoing efforts to perform our work at the highest possible level of professionalism in every aspect of what AADD does as an organization,” said Mary Yoder, AADD executive director.
She further explained that the CARF accreditation is necessary for AADD to perform fee-for-service work with the State of Georgia, and that it improves AADD’s standing in competition for grants.
Brian J. Boon, Ph.D. and the president/CEO of CARF said, “This (accreditation) is an indication of your organization’s dedication and commitment to improving the quality of the lives of the persons served. CARF surveyors made no recommendations, which signifies that they did not identify any areas of nonconformance to the standards. This is an extraordinary accomplishment, as only three percent of CARF surveys result in an organization receiving no recommendations.”
Beyond the Three-Year Accreditation, AADD was cited for demonstrating, “exemplary conformance to standards” for developing and presenting the 50th Anniversary Film Series, AADD: Stories of Triumph, in 2006. Films shown during the series depicted the lives of persons with developmental disabilities, and were Rain Man, 39 Pounds of Love, The Miracle Worker, and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.
“This [series] demonstrated an exemplary example of the development of community awareness, education of developmental disabilities and the individuals whose lives are affected by them,” the CARF Survey Summary said.
