We had a fantastic turnout for ABLE Advocacy Day at the Capitol on February 24, 2016 with more than 50 self-advocates, family members and representatives from the Georgia ABLE Coalition in attendance. Participants were welcomed by ABLE Act (HB 768) lead author, Rep. Lee Hawkins (R-Gainesville), before spending the morning learning more about the ABLE Act, how to approach their legislators, writing their “pitch” and practicing how to deliver it with impact. Armed with knowledge and enthusiasm, participants had the opportunity to personally thank their House member for voting yes, then “worked the ropes” to get in front of their Senate member and urge their support for HB 768. It was a very fun and successful day at the Capitol.
If you were not able to make it to ABLE Advocacy Day, you can still contact your Senate member and ask them to vote yes on HB 768. Visit openstates.org and enter your home address to identify your Senate member and how to contact them. Click here for talking points to tell them why they should support HB 768.
Together we can make the ABLE Act a reality this year in Georgia!
