Advice from Mom to Mom

Happy Mother’s Day Weekend. We hope you get a chance to relax and even get a little pampered. Recently, we had a group of moms participating in our Partners in Policymaking program. We asked them to give their advice and encouragement to other moms of families living with a developmental disability. Here is what they had to say:

  • Don’t second guess yourself. Trust your instincts!
  • You ARE doing enough and you HAVE done it.
  • If you don’t have local family, construct a strong support system.
  • It is going to be okay. You are doing a great job!
  • I love you mom for everything you do and everything God leads you to do.
  • Be very choosy about therapists. Ensure they see potential and accomplishment and not only talking about what he/she cannot do. These people can drive your world. Having the right team makes all the difference.
  • Give yourself a break. Often
  • Hang in there! This is a marathon, not a sprint. Pace yourself.
  • You cannot change what has already happened. Move on and forgive yourself.
  • Breathe. You are doing a great job. Don’t forget to take care of yourself.
  • Laugh often.
  • Don’t stress the small stuff.
  • Crying is healthy.
  • Keep a part-time job outside of the home and stay connected to your profession.
  • Keep adding to your retirement!
